Nutrition
Nutrition is the process by which the body uses food to sustain
life, to grow, to be active, and for normal functioning of
every organ and tissue. Adequate nutrition is also important
for psychological well-being. The nutrients in the foods we
eat are essential to sustain health and life. There are more
than fifty essential nutrients each one plays a special role
in the body. No one food can provide all these nutrients.
Healthy eating is not dieting or low calorie food choices.
Deprivation is not normal and is not healthy. Healthy eating
provides energy and nutrients to the body. The foods we eat
are to provide our bodies energy for healthy functioning.
Energy is derived from the macronutrients: fat, carbohydrates
and protein. Micronutrients vitamins and minerals are substances
required in small quantities which are essential for many
body functions. Water is also considered an essential nutrient.
The basics of nutrition is balance variety and moderation.
Wellness
Everyone
wants to live a long and healthy life. People today are living
longer than ever. It makes sense to take care of your body,
to preserve your health so you may live better not only longer.
Wellness is for a lifetime, it means taking charge of your
own health. Each of us is given the gift of health at birth.
Some of us work hard to maintain and preserve our gift. Many
others however take this gift for granted they assume it will
always exist and are disappointed, even shocked or amazed
when they are faced with an illness. Your body is your house
it must be maintained, if you wear it out where will you go.
The three components of wellness are, nutrition, fitness,
and lifestyle.
